Carl Robert Cessna, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, went to be with the Lord Monday, November 18, 2024. Born in Grant Township April 26, 1935, he married Dorothy (Dottie) J. Gromley December 31, 1954. She passed away November 1, 2014, just two months before their sixtieth anniversary.
The past ten years, Carl missed Dottie so much, and would often look at his phone wallpaper or pictures in his living room and remark, “Isn’t she just beautiful?!” Their love for each other was unequalled, as evidenced through their obvious affection and mutual respect, providing beautiful examples for their children and grandchildren to follow.
Carl is survived by two daughters, Melodie LaVan (Steve) of Indiana, Pennsylvania, Pamela Kuhn (Dr. RB) of Muncie, Indiana, and one son, Rev. Craig Cessna (Becky) of Lancaster, Ohio. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Pamela Satterfield Asbury (Glen), Rev. Jordan Satterfield (Kayla), Melanie Kuhn Clemens (Shawn), Jennifer Cessna, Rev. Andrew Cessna (Sherilyn), Emily Kuhn Wright (Jonathon), Rev. Luke LaVan (Joanna) and Lori Spurgin (Nathan), as well as nineteen great grandchildren.
Preceding Carl in death were his parents, William and Vae Cessna; three brothers, Arthur, Norman, and William; one son-in-law, Rev. Ray Satterfield; and two granddaughters, Carla Satterfield and Sarah Kuhn.
Carl had been a faithful member of Hillsdale Wesleyan Methodist Church, where he served in several capacities many years, including the church board of trustees, treasurer, and usher; he also served as treasurer of the Indiana Wesleyan School in Dixonville for over eleven years. At the age of sixteen, Carl began working with his father and brothers at the Hillsdale Mining Company (which they owned) in Cherry Tree.
For a six-foot-two man to go underground into a thirty-two-inch-high tunnel every day, spanning forty years was a task very few others have accomplished. He was co-owner of Hillsdale Trucking Company, as well.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, November 20, at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home & Crematory, 965 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA 15701. The service celebrating Carl’s life, officiated by the Rev. Benjamin Blowers and the Rev. Stephen Kunselman, will be held Thursday, November 21, at 11 AM at the funeral home, preceded by visitation at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, PA.
