The American Red Cross has announced a severe blood shortage across the United States and a new incentive for those to donate.
The organization said that since July 1st, the national blood supply has fallen over 25%. The heat waves and summer vacations have resulted in a drop of 19,000 donations over the month. Along with that, hospital demand for blood products remains strong. They also say that there is a need for those with type O blood to donate as their supplies are so low, distributions of this type of blood are reduced below what hospitals are counting on.
As a reward for giving blood, platelets or plasma at a blood drive, donors will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email.
The next blood drive in Indiana area is scheduled for tomorrow at the Westmoreland County Community College center on Hammil Road in Indiana from 11 AM to 4 PM. To set up an appointment, you can log on to redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Walk-ins are also welcome.
