For the first time in program history, the Indiana High baseball team will compete for the WPIAL Championship in Class 4A this afternoon as the Indians take on North Catholic at Wild Things Park in Washington County.
No. 9 Indiana is 13-8 coming into the game and overcame No. 8 Central Valley, No. 16 Blackhawk and No. 9 Montour in the 4A bracket after finishing second in Section 4 at 6-3. North Catholic is the sixth seed and finished first in Section 4 with records of 16-5 and 9-1. The Trojans knocked off No. 11 Elizabeth Forward, No. 3 West Mifflin, and No. 2 Thomas Jefferson on their trip to the championship.
North Catholic swept the season series from Indiana by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 in late April.
Indians coach Dan Petroff says his team is excited for another opportunity against North Catholic in the championship game.
Petroff said his team will look to not only win for them, but for the Indiana community as well.
Ben Ryan said he and his fellow seniors are grateful that their hard work is paying off, and they plan on making the most of this opportunity.
Ryan Okopal helped Indiana by firing five innings of shutout ball in their semifinal game against Montour, saving the Indians’ bullpen. He said their eager to prove themselves this afternoon.
