A program that’s part of the IUP Institute for Rural Health and Safety is working with PennDOT for a campaign to raise awareness about safe driving and traffic laws this week, which is Highway Safety Law Awareness Week.
Members of the Indiana County Highway Safety Project, Police from Indiana borough and IUP police and state troopers have placed “Yield To Pedestrians” signs along Oakland Avenue next to the Oak Grove and Johnson Hall and on Maple Street near Zink Hall and Stouffer Hall, which are places that are popular pedestrian crossings. Project Coordinator Amy Shellhammer said in a statement that the signs remind both drivers and pedestrians of their legal responsibilities and will help keep both groups as safe as possible. She added that laws are meant to protect everyone who uses the roads, and that many accidents can be avoided if people follow the laws.
