With Endy Rodriguez out for the season, the Pirates are heading to Bradenton, Florida for the opening of spring training next week with major concerns at catcher. Only Henry Davis, who has never started a Major League game at catcher, and veteran backups Jason Delay and newly-signed Ali Sanchez are in the mix. Sanchez has just seven MLB appearances on his resume, the last of those in 2016..
Baseball insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network reports the Pirates have shown interest in free agent Gary Sánchez, a two-time All-Star who revived his MLB career with the Padres last year.
Sánchez batted only .217 last year but hit 19 home runs before his season was ended by a fractured wrist in September.
