A 70-year-old man died in an apartment fire on Monday in Derry Borough.
The fire was first reported just after noon on Monday at 422 North Chestnut Street. Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson said that firefighters extricated 70-year-old William S. Trout III from his apartment and he was taken to Independence Health-Latrobe’s emergency room, where he was pronounced dead by a hospital physician. The exact cause of Trout’s death was not released, and an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
All the other occupants were able to escape safely. The fire was knocked down around 15 minutes and contained to a first-floor apartment’s kitchen. The fire is considered accidental, but the exact cause is not yet known. State Police Fire Marshals have been called in to investigate.
