Fresh off the All-Star break, the Pirates started the second half of the regular season with an error-plagued loss to the San Francisco Giants.
Greg Brown recaps the 6-4 loss.
Game two of the series is tonight. RHP Johan Oviedo (3-10, 4.75 ERA) goes for the Pirates. RHP Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.91 ERA) starts for San Francisco, just days after appearing in the All-Star Game Tuesday night. Airtime is 6:40 on WCCS.
The Pirates inked four of their 2023 draft picks during Friday night’s game. At PNC Park was second-round pick from Michigan State infielder Mitch Jebb, who signed for a $1.65 million bonus. Fourth-round pick RHP Carlson Reed (WVU) signed for $600,000, fifth-round pick RHP Patrick Reilly (Vanderbilt) signed for his full slot value of $455,600, and tenth-round selection RHP Landon Tomkins (Louisiana Tech) signed for $15,000. No word on when first overall selection LSU RHP Paul Skenes plans to sign.
PROSPECT WATCH
Pirates 2019 first-round pick and No. 4 prospect RHP Quinn Priester lasted just one inning with Triple-A Indianapolis last night, allowing just one hit. He was seen smiling and hugging teammates after being pulled, and with no starter listed for Pittsburgh on Tuesday, rumors speculate Priester could be called up to make his MLB debut against Cleveland.
Meanwhile, No. 3 prospect catcher Endy Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a grand slam in last night’s win. He was also pulled but not until the final inning.
