IUP students and faculty members are working with Indiana Borough on a national pilot program to create stronger and more informed population when it comes to community health.
Indiana Borough in collaboration with IUP’s Department of Biology and Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences will evaluate a device supplied by the Water Environment Federation to provide “point of use” analysis for wastewater evaluation. The machine is set to identify the presence of diseases like Covid-19, influenza and RSV. The machine will be housed in the department of Biology with students analyzing the samples. The information from the device will help the WEF and the Centers for Disease Control to determine the efficacy of the smaller machines in rural communities.
This builds on IUP’s and the borough’s ongoing community wastewater surveillance project that started in the spring of 2021.
