At Tuesday night’s Indiana Borough Council work session, council approved accepting a $10,000 grant to expand the comfort K-9 program.
Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl said that Axel has been a great asset to the police department, but cannot meet every need and request made of him. Chief Schawl said that the new K-9 officer will have two missions with the department.
Schawl said that Axel’s human partner, Sgt. Jeffrey Hoag was able to use his network to set things up so that the borough can acquire the bloodhound through an opportunity through the Jimmy Ryce center in Florida. While the grant will get the bloodhound to Indiana, support for the new K-9 officer’s upkeep will be provided by several community sponsors.
No word yet on when the new dog will arrive in Indiana.
