A suspect in the robbery of a Downtown Indiana convenience store was apprehended by police yesterday.
Indiana Borough Detectives have charged 53-year-old Joseph Francis Hamay of Indiana with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, simple assaults and possessing instruments of a crime. The charges are based on the incident on April 6th where someone entered the store, went behind the counter and demanded cash while brandishing a knife. Not only did police have video surveillance from the store, but they were able to obtain other video of the suspect after the robbery, and the clothes that the suspect was seen wearing were found discarded nearby.
Hamay was taken into custody at a location in White Township and is now in Indiana County Jail to await a preliminary hearing. The Indiana County District Attorney’s office assisted in the investigation.
Chief Justin Schawl said in a statement that they are grateful to everyone who shared the video and pictures and provided information throughout the investigation, and said that community support is always needed and appreciated.
