Riding the momentum of a shutout win over Nashville on Thursday, the Penguins turn their attention to the red-hot Boston Bruins this afternoon at PPG Paints Arena.
The Penguins are in a tough spot in terms of playoff positioning as they sit just one point ahead of the Florida Panthers for the final Wild Card playoff spot in the East. The Bruins, however, were awarded the Presidents Trophy Thursday night for having the best record in the NHL. They’ve also downed the Penguins in their two previous meetings this season.
Coach Mike Sullivan knows Boston is a buzzsaw in the NHL, and he credits it to their depth.
No new injuries to report for the Pens. Jan Rutta is still recovering from a lower body injury and skated in a non-contact jersey yesterday. Defenseman Marcus Pettersson skated on his own in a separate rink the team’s practice facility.
Airtime for the Penguins and Bruins is 2 p.m. on U92.5 FM and U92radio.com Puck drop will follow at 3.
The Penguins also swung a trade yesterday, acquiring defenseman Thimo Nickl from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the rights to Judd Caulfield. The 21-year-old Nickl recorded eight assists in 47 games with AIK of HockeyAllsvenskan in Sweden. He was originally drafted by the Ducks in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
