After sweeping a doubleheader Saturday from East Stroudsburg, the IUP basketball teams are getting set for another doubleheader this Wednesday, when they travel to Seton Hill.
IUP’s top-ranked men’s team won their 20th game of the season, 67-53, over the 25th-ranked Warriors, making it fourteen years in a row to reach the 20-win mark. Shawndale Jones and Tomiwa Sulaiman each scored 18 points. Coach Joe Lombardi says beating East Stroudbsurg was no small accomplishment.
Lombardi credited the IUP administration, the community, and his players for reaching the 20-win mark again. He said this particular group is a joy to coach.
The Crimson Hawks’ women finally got their complete lineup back together with the return of Elena Cardona to the lineup. She scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds in the 71-53 win, and teammate Maria Cerro scored 24 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor.
Coach Craig Carey says a video session before Saturday’s game helped show the women that when they play fast, they play their best game.
Seton Hill’s men will come into Wednesday’s game at 12-8 overall and 7-7 in the PSAC. They are especially tough on their home floor, with an 8-2 record. IUP won the first time they played them, 76-55, on January 4th at the KCAC.
The Griffins’ women’s team is 14-9 and also 7-7 in the PSAC. IUP won the first matchup between the two teams, 77-60.
