We learned on Saturday that Purchase Line senior running back Cameron Yoder had suffered an injury in the team’s game against United, and that it appeared to be serious. We are now learning just how serious, and a GoFundMe account has been opened to help his family defray medical expenses.
Yoder was injured in the first quarter of the game when he was tackled and landed on the football. Despite the pain, he was out for only a couple of plays before returning to the action and playing the rest of the game on both offense and defense, including overtime.
After the game, he asked to be taken to the hospital, where it was learned that landing on the ball in the first quarter had perforated his duodenum, which caused stomach acid to leak into his body, according to the GoFundMe narrative. He was transferred from Indiana Regional Medical Center to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he underwent emergency surgery. Two nerve blocks were then put in place to manage the pain.
A Facebook post last night said that the nerve blocks were removed and he is suffering headaches and nausea, but he’s expected to try some solid food perhaps as early as today and could come home later in the week. According to a family friend, his mother says he stayed in the game because he “didn’t want to let his team down.”
Cameron Yoder is an IUP Upward Bound Math and Science Scholar, is the senior class chaplain, was elected to the homecoming court, is on the basketball, football, and track teams, and competed on the school’s cross-country team and was a competitive cheerleader.
