Tough blow for the Penguins as it was announced today that they will be without another goalie throughout the remainder of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said during a news conference today that Casey DeSmith underwent successful core muscle surgery this morning and will be out for the rest of the playoff race. Sullivan did not say what caused DeSmith to go into surgery.
He added that he did not have the opportunity to talk to DeSmith as “it all happened so fast.” This will mark another postseason DeSmith will miss due to injury.
With this news, the Penguins will roll back into Pittsburgh with the tandem of Louis Domingue and Alex D’Orio in net.
Sullivan said that he’s confident in Domingue starting in DeSmith’s place.
Among other injury updates, Sullivan said that Brian Dumolin and Rickard Rakell are both “day-to-day”. Dumolin is currently dealing with a lower-body injury while Rakell skated with skills coach Ty Hennes this morning.
Tristan Jarry is continuing his rehab and did not skate today, and Jason Zucker is a game-time decision.
