At Wednesday’s meeting, the Penns Manor School Board heard from their solicitor concerning the day’s actions on the K-12 mask mandates.
Earlier in the day, Commonwealth Court ruled that the Pennsylvania Department of Health order to mandate masks in K-12 schools was not properly put in place as the Department did not follow proper procedures, but later in the day, Governor Tom Wolf made an immediate appeal of the ruling to the State Supreme Court, putting the mask mandate decision on hold. The plaintiffs in the case, which included Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman, can also file a request to the supreme court to lift the stay on the mask mandate.
With the mask mandate on hold, district solicitor Ronald Saffron advised the board that the best thing to do would be to keep the mask mandate in place for now. Governor Wolf also mentioned that the mask mandate would end on January 17th, but Saffron said that the State Supreme Court could hear the case sooner than that.
In other business, the board approved committing $379,336 from the district’s unassigned fund balance for future retirement costs and transfer $379,337 of the district’s unassigned fund balance to the district’s capital reserve for future capital projects.
Also it was announced that the board’s reorganization meeting will be December 9th, with the regular board meeting to follow.
