On Thursday Night, the Homer-Center School Board heard differing opinions from the public on the issue of masks and vaccines.
During public comment, Anthony Mussomeli of Coral asked that the board not follow the example of the Los Angeles School District of mandating vaccines for their students.
Arlene Wanatosky of Homer City said that she was in favor of having students wear masks, saying that the masks were part of techniques that worked to prevent Covid’s spread, and to trust the medical professionals.
Many members of the school board expressed their thanks not just for the people’s opinions, but for the professional way that they expressed their differing opinions.
In other business, the board ratified the contract between the district and the Homer Center Educators association. The agreement is retroactive to August 15th of this year and goes to August 14th of 2025, and will have raises each year, starting at 2.75 percent, and going down by .o5 percent each year of the contract. District business manager Gregg Kalemba said that while both sides didn’t get everything they wanted in the deal, both sides were able to walk away satisfied with the contract.
