The Indiana High Little Indians are the 2021 Class A Penguins Cup champions, and will play for the state championship on Saturday against the Flyers Cup champion, which will be determined Tuesday night.
Indiana topped Chartiers Valley, 3-2, last night in a tense matchup which featured a natural hat trick in the second period by Tanner Agnello. The Little Indians peppered Colts goaltender Logan Marnik with 51 shots and overcame a 52-second, 6-on-4 two-man advantage for Chartiers Valley at the end of the game to grab the win.
After a scoreless first period, the Colts’ Chris DeAngelis took a tripping penalty at the 6:56 mark of the second period. Agnello scored his first goal on the power play a minute and ten seconds later, assisted by Ethan Agnello. The DeAngelis penalty was the fifth of seven consecutive minors against Chartiers Valley, but Indiana could only convert one goal with the man advantage. Agnello notched his second goal at the 11:17 mark of the second period, off an assist from Danny Williams, and he completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal at 13:38, sending Indiana into the third period with a 3-0 lead.
However, Chartiers Valley stubbornly refused to back down, with Greg Kraemer scoring on the power play 8:35 into the third period and Jackson Fodor notching an even-strength goal on a breakaway at 11:43.
Seamus O’Connor stopped 12 of 14 shots on goal for 20-0 Indiana, which will play on Saturday morning at the UPMC Sports Complex in Cranberry against the winner of tonight’s Flyers Cup championship game between top-seeded West Chester East and #6 seed West Chester Henderson.
