It has been a very active weekend for Indiana County’s emergency responders, with a number of fire companies sent to battle a tire fire in Young Township and a couple of accidents as well.
The very smoky tire fire along Taylor Road near the Indiana County/Armstrong County line was reported at 5:02 PM, with Iselin-West Lebanon and Coal Run-McIntyre firefighters dispatched. Elderton was quickly summoned, and at 5:30 multiple fire companies were called, including Saltsburg, Creekside, Tunnelton, and Kiski Township. Fifteen minutes later, six more fire departments were sent to the scene, from Indiana, Armstrong, and Westmoreland counties. They included Blairsville, two fire stations from Greensburg, Aultman, Slickville, and Sardis. They battled the fire for most of the night, with trucks hauling water for tanker assist to the remote wooded area where more than a thousand tires had been discarded. Overnight, it rekindled, with Iselin-West Lebanon, Coal Run-McIntyre, Tunnelton, Kiski Township, and the Black Lick Tanker Task Force dispatched.
The Department of Environmental Protection has been notified.
Other emergency calls this weekend included a shed fire along Route 119 in Home at 2:40 this morning. Marion Center firefighters were dispatched. Firefighters from Coral-Graceton and Homer City were sent to an accident on Cherry Run Road in Center Township at 1:52 this morning. Creekside firefighters were dispatched to an accident on Route 954 in Washington Township at 2:53 AM today. Pine Township firefighters were dispatched for an accident on Route 553 in Pine Township at 6:32 this morning.
