IUP’s former facilities director has sued University President Dr. Michael Driscoll, claiming that he was fired over warning his fellow employees about a Coronavirus risk.
Reports say that Donald Woolslayer was fired three weeks ago by Driscoll. He had learned that the spouse of one of his employees had contracted Covid-19 and felt he should alert other IUP employees so they can take the proper precautions. While his supervisors and the university’s human resources office advised him against sending the email announcement, he sent it out on March 30th. The next day, he was fired by Driscoll, saying he had “lost confidence” in his abilities to do his job.
The lawsuit says Driscoll’s actions violated the first and 14th amendments, violating his right to free speech and equal protection under the law. The suit seeks Woolslayer’s reinstatement with back pay and all benefits.
Representatives with IUP said that they do not comment on litigation
