Homer City Redevelopment has announced that crews will perform demolition of the remaining portion of the smokestack and the coal cleaning plant tomorrow morning.
Weather permitting, the charges will be set off at 7:30 AM. The company says this will be a less dramatic event than the original implosion on March 22nd that brought down the other stacks and the cooling towers, but similar safety precautions will be taken. All of the site’s access points will be closed prior to the initiation of the first demolition, including hiking and ATV trails, and all roads. HCR will not be able to accommodate the public on its property or close proximity, and there will be no viewing areas set up. Anyone wanting to watch the demolition must do so outside the private and secure parameters.
The demolition is being undertaken in full compliance with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection regulations and licensed blasters will handle the process from start to finish. The company is also reminding everyone that if the weather turns foul, the demolition could be delayed by hours or even days.
