The Pirates on Wednesday signed left-handed pitcher Chase Ferguson to a one-year, $3 million contract. Ferguson played with the Yankees and Astros last season, going 1-4 with a 4.64 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 54-and-one-third innings.
MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf reports Ferguson will primarily be used as a reliever to start the year with the potential to make spot starts later on.
The Pirates also avoided arbitration with four eligible players:
- RHP David Bednar – $5.9 million
- RHP Colin Holderman – $1.5 million
- C Joey Bart – $1.75 million
- LHP Bailey Falter – $2.22 million
Pitchers Johan Oviedo and Dennis Santana did not reach respective settlements. They will exchange figures with the team in hopes of reaching a settlement.
