The catholic diocese of Greensburg has announced some changes concerning the way things are done for mass due to growing concerns over flu and coronavirus.
There have been no reported cases of coronavirus in Pennsylvania, but because of concerns over both flu and coronavirus, Bishop Edward Malesic has asked in a letter to parish leaders that all parishes in the diocese take some preventative steps. This includes suspending the physical exchange of the peace, which is traditionally done by shaking hands; and by temporarily suspending distribution of Holy Communion from the chalice. Also, parishes are being asked to make provisions for reception of communion for those who suffer from celiac disease.
Bishop Malesic is also asking the worship leaders to relay to their congregations that if they feel sick, they are not obligated to attend mass, and are advised to stay home. They will also ask ushers and greeters to hold open doors to minimize contact on public surfaces, and to clean and drain holy water fonts on a weekly basis.
The diocese will continue to monitor influenza and coronavirus developments closely and take further action as necessary.
