The hometown crowd of Louisville wasn’t enough to stop Penn State as they downed the Cardinals in four sets to claim the NCAA Volleyball Championship. It was the Nittany Lions’ first title since 2014 and the first title for coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley, who etched her name in history as the first woman coach to win a championship.
It’s been an up-and-down year for Schumacher-Cawley, as she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer back in September. Despite that, she never gave up and continued to lead Penn State to a Big 10 and National Championship.
Schumacher-Cawley talked about what inspired her each day during the season.
Jess Mruzik was named Most Outstanding Players after posting a season-high 29 kills against Louisville. Teammates Camryn Hannah and Gillian Grimes were named to the All-Tournament team.
