A pre-trial hearing is scheduled today for a man charged with killing his mother in February of 2015.
The hearing for Todd Walters is set for today in front of Indiana County President Judge William Martin, after it was rescheduled in January. Walters is charged with the beating death of his mother, 72-year-old Ruth Shirey at a home on Diamond Avenue in Indiana in February of 2015. He was arrested in Altoona later that day while driving his mother’s car.
Walters is currently being held at Torrance State Hospital and his trial has been delayed due to mental health issues. In June of 2018, Judge Martin ruled that Walters was competent to stand trial. Another mental health evaluation was called for and a second criminal case was filed after Walters allegedly attacked a fellow inmate at Torrance, and that prompted more treatment. Last October, Judge Martin once again ruled Walters was again fit to stand trial.
Walters’ trial is scheduled to start on March 23rd.
