On the final day of the NFL Draft in Green Bay, the Steelers bolstered the defense yet again. Four of the five draft picks Saturday were defensive players. The other was a national championship-winning quarterback.
Yesterday first choice was in the fourth round, where the Steelers selected Ohio State defensive captain Jack Sawyer, an edge rusher. In the fifth round, the choice was Iowa defensive lineman Yahya Black. The sixth round pick was Ohio State quarterback Will Howard, and after a trade with New England in which they added a second seventh round pick to the one they already had, the Steelers concluded the draft with Washington inside linebacker Carson Bruener (the son of former Steelers top draft choice Mark Breuner, the tight end who played nine seasons in Pittsburgh and is a current Steelers scout), and cornerback Donte Kent of Central Michigan.
Of seven players taken by Pittsburgh in the draft, six are from Big Ten schools. They started on Thursday with Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. On Friday they had no second round pick and took Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson in the third round.
After the draft, the Steelers quickly added seven undrafted free agents. They included former Pitt kicker Ben Sauls, wide receivers Ke’Shawn Williams of Indiana and Roc Taylor of Memphis, fullback D.J. Thomas-Jones of South Alabama, tight end J.J. Galbreath of South Dakota, guard Aiden Williams of Minnesota-Duluth, and safety Sebastian Castro of Iowa.
