Indiana University of Pennsylvania played host today to the first of four Regional Rural Health Summits at the KCAC.
Dr. Valerie Arkoosh with the Human Services department said this was the first conference of its kind, and there will be others across the state. She said the reason why IUP and Indiana were chosen as the first site because there has already been success in the region.
The proposed College for Osteopathic Medicine was another reason to come to Indiana. State Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen was pleased with the progress made to make the school a reality, and how important it will be to have a medical school in the state that will be focused on rural health.
During the opening of the summit, it was announced that another $1 million gift for the proposed osteopathic medicine school was made to the university. President Dr. Michael Driscoll said the anonymous donor has a lot of connections to IUP and the Indiana Community.
With the gift, IUP has now received $32 million in private and government funding for the initiative.
