Taking a three-game losing streak into their series opener against the Nationals, the Pirates turned to their stopper, Paul Skenes, and he did the job in a Bucco win. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton liked the aggressive Pirates offense.
Shelton is happy he has Paul Skenes, a true stopper, in his rotation.
Endy Rodriguez started at catcher last night but suffered a lacerated ring finger and had to leave the game in the first inning. Henry Davis came off the bench to catch the rest of the game, making him and Skenes the first-ever battery of top overall draft choices in Major League history.
Game two of the series is tonight on Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball. Mitch Keller [1-1, 4.24 ERA] goes for the Pirates against Jake Irvin [0-0, 5.63 ERA]. Airtime is 6:15 with first pitch at 6:40 on WCCS.
