The remnants of a smokestack that was part of the Homer City Generating station came down Sunday morning.
After a one-day delay due to weather conditions, demolition crews were able to demolish the remnants of the U3 stack with an implosion. Homer City Redevelopment Corporation called it a success and it concludes the final steps in their demolition.
On March 22nd, the other stacks and cooling towers were brought down by controlled implosions, but the U3 stack, the tallest one, was only partially demolished. The property is being renovated to become a natural gas-powered electricity generating plant which is expected to provide power to several AI data centers and also send electricity into the grid. Construction could start later this year on the new facility. Power could start flowing from it in late 2027.
