The Pirates broke their four-game losing streak yesterday with a win in Tampa. Greg Brown has the recap.
Andrew McCutchen was not in the lineup again yesterday, missing his third start in a row. The Pirates have not announced any injury for the 38-year-old, who homered in his last start on Sunday in Miami and had a pinch-hit single on Tuesday in Tampa. Bryan Reynolds has been the Pirates’ designated hitter for the last three games because he has triceps soreness and reportedly can’t throw a baseball.
The Pirates have updated the injury status for a number of injured players. Pitcher Jared Jones will have his elbow reassessed tomorrow. Second baseman Nick Gonzalez is wearing a boot in his fractured ankle and moving about on a motorized scooter, with new imaging scheduled for the middle of the month. First baseman Spencer Horwitz is hitting in the batting cage and will ramp up in the next ten days. Pitcher Johan Oviedo’s injured lat will be re-examined in about a week, and tomorrow in Bradenton, pitcher Dauri Moretta will throw his first live batting practice since last year’s Tommy John surgery.
After taking today off, the Pirates come home for their 25th home opener at PNC Park tomorrow. Team president Travis Williams announced yesterday that teacher and IUP graduate Marc Fogel will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Fogel was released from a Russian prison, where he was unjustly held for three-and-a-half years, on February 11th.
