At Monday night’s meeting, the Indiana School Board and Superintendent Robert Heinrich said that there is no agreement in place concerning sending Indiana students to the River Valley STEAM Academy.
River Valley first approached Indiana School District with a memorandum of understanding that would allow students from Indiana to attend the Saltsburg school, but with very few exceptions to the school board, the district is legally bound and obligated to send its students to the ICTC. The MOU was rejected by the Indiana board in June, and it was sent back to River Valley with several suggestions for changes. At a meeting on August 13th, without any input or approval from Indiana, the River Valley School Board approved the MOU that was sent over, and Heinrich said that the document that was approved by River Valley was the same one rejected by Indiana.
In a statement during his board president message, Walter Schroth said that whether this was done accidentally or on purpose, the fact remains that no agreement is in place. He added that this is not an agreement that can be quickly approved.
Heinrich and River Valley’s Superintendent Philip Martel will meet later this week to discuss the matter further.
