Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and U.S. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen announced Tuesday that Pennsylvania will offer the IRS’s free electronic tax-filing system to taxpayers next tax season.
Direct File will allow taxpayers to file their taxes online with the IRS for free. The program is seen as an alternative to tax prep programs or hiring an accountant. Yellen claimed that the program will actually make it easier for people to file their taxes and get the refunds they deserve. The announcement comes on the heels of a successful pilot program rolled out earlier this year. By the final week of that program, the tax agency processed over 5,000 accepted returns each day, with more than 140,000 taxpayers using the Direct File system.
Taxpayers will have the ability to file both federal and state taxes online through the system. At least 1.5 million state residents will be eligible to use the program in 2025.
