The Pirates’ Quinn Priester had one bad inning, and the Bucco bats couldn’t catch up against the Brewers. Joe Block reports.
Manager Derek Shelton says Priester’s outing was ruined by a bad second inning.
Shelton liked the hard contact by the Pirates’ offense, but they couldn’t get balls to fall in against the Brewers’ great defense, highlighted by centerfielder Sal Frelick’s diving catch of an Andrew McCutchen drive on the warning track in the 8th inning. Frelick had two diving catches and a 2-run home run in the game.
The series concludes this afternoon. The Pirates will send left-hander Martín Perez to the mound to take on Brewers lefty Robert Gasser, who threw six shutout innings and earned the win against the Cardinals in his first appearance of the season last Friday. It’s a 12:45 airtime, 1:10 first pitch on WCCS.
One night after giving up a grand slam in the 8th inning, reliever Josh Fleming finds himself out of a job. The Pirates designated the left-hander for assignment and recalled right-hander Ryder Ryan from Indianapolis. Ryan is 1-0 with an ERA of 3.00 in 12 innings with the Bucs this year while Fleming was 1-1 with one save and an ERA of 5.68 after he gave up five earned runs Monday night.
Former Yankee Domingo German, who signed with the Pirates late in spring training, made his first appearance of the season yesterday for Class A Bradenton, throwing four innings and giving up one run on three hits with three walks. German threw a no-hitter for the Yankees last season but his career has been derailed by personal problems.
