It took a few extra innings, but the Pirates won on Opening Day in Miami. Joe Block has the recap.
The Pirates made some roster moves before the first pitch. Jose Hernandez was called up on an emergency basis after Roansy Contreras was placed on paternity leave, and Hernandez pitched a scoreless 12th for the save.
To add pitchers Jared Jones, Ryder Ryan, and Hunter Stratton, the Pirates had to make room on the 40-man roster. Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba, catcher Ali Sanchez, and pitcher Jackson Wolf were designated for assignment.
The team also placed pitchers Carmen Mlodzinski and Colin Holderman on the 15-day injured list, and catcher Yasmani Grandal and utility man Ji Hwan Bae were put on the 10-day injured list.
Game two of the series is tonight. The Bucs send lefthander Martin Pérez to the mound against Marlins lefty AJ Puk. It’s a 6:45 airtime, 7:10 first pitch on WCCS.
