State police are investigating a crash that killed a child Sunday afternoon in East Wheatfield Township.
Troopers say at 4:56 p.m., a 62-year-old woman from Armagh attempted to turn left onto Route 22 at the intersection with West Philadelphia Street Extension but crossed into the path of a car driven by a 21-year-old woman from Homestead, who was driving east. An eight-year-old girl in the Armagh woman’s car was killed in the accident and was pronounced dead on scene by members from the Indiana County Coroner’s office.
The woman from Armagh was wearing her seatbelt, according to police. No word on if the Homestead woman was wearing hers.
Both drivers were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment of serious injures, and both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
Members of the Troop A Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate.
Assisting state police and the coroner’s office were members from the Armagh/East Wheatfield and Clyde fire departments, Citizens’ Ambulance and PennDOT.
