Melvin P. Thomas, Jr. 84 of Indiana, PA went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 with his family by his side at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
Melvin, “Mel” was the son of Melvin P. Thomas Sr. and Verna M (Janosik) of Creekside, PA.
Mel was a graduate of Marion Center High School, class of 1958. Mel was an employee of Sweeny’s Market in Ernest, PA where he apprenticed as a meat cutter. Shortly after graduation Mel passed his civil service test and accepted a position with the FBI in Washington, DC. After several years serving the government, Mel chose to leave the “establishment” and accepted a position with Giant. Mel was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 where he proudly served his Country in Viet Nam, returning home in 1968. He continued his employment with Giant and retired serving 42 years as a gourmet meat cutter.
Mel was a member of the VFW, Indiana Bear Club, and loved heated political discussions and enjoyed hunting.
Mel married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Sunberg) and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Mel enjoyed his family and is survived by his two sons Robert J. Thomas (Rachael) and Kevin B. Thomas, both of Colorado; a daughter Carla D. Barker, Indiana, Pa; four grandchildren Joshua Sales, Andrew Barker, Zachary Thomas, and Cole Thomas; Two sisters Mary H. Rice, VA and Lois Tasker, IL; and numerous niece and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and a sister, Dawn Joan Thomas.
Friends will be received on Thursday, February 15th from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 398 Church Street, Indiana, Pa.
