The IUP basketball teams took on two powerful Cal U squads last night, and split the doubleheader. Jack Benedict has the recap.
Women’s coach Craig Carey says IUP’s defense did the job and created opportunities for the offense, which wasn’t perfect but was good enough.
Carey says IUP isn’t as deep as he would like right now, but every player is a contributor.
Men’s coach Joe Lombardi says Cal did a great job defensively on IUP’s best weapons, Bryce Radford, Ethan Porterfield, and Garvin Clarke.
Lombardi says IUP and Cal have played some great basketball over the years, and this time, Cal came through.
IUP’s Ethan Porterfield is the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week. He scored 19 points with 10 rebounds last week against Seton Hill with a block and a steal, and followed that up with 14 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and three blocks against Slippery Rock. It’s Porterfield’s second conference honor of the season. He was co-athlete of the week in the first week of December.
IUP has played three doubleheaders since last Wednesday, and they will be back on the court tomorrow night at Clarion. Then they’ll get a break…no game this weekend.
