While Western Pennsylvania will not be the site of a regional clean hydrogen hub through the United States Department of Energy, some leaders of the PA Senate say there are some positives coming out of it.
One of the clean hydrogen hubs will be located in West Virginia. That, along with a site in Philadelphia will receive $1.7 billion in investment from the federal government and billions more from the private sector. The Department of Energy is looking to produce 50 million metric tons of clean hydrogen fuel by the year 2050. The hubs are expected to produce many jobs across a number of industries, especially in the skilled building and construction trades.
Western Pennsylvania will not have one of these hubs in the area, but PA Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman said there will be economic benefits, and the hubs will put Pennsylvania a step closer to energy independence.
He added that Senate Republicans are also supporting the building trades that will take part in the hubs construction.
The federal funding for the hydrogen hubs will come through the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program.
