A Westmoreland County man died yesterday afternoon in a crash during a drag racing event at the Keystone Raceway, located off Route 22 at Stone Jug Road between Blairsville and New Alexandria.
Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson identified the victim as 37-year-old Ronnie John Ruggiero of Irwin, whose pickup truck sped into a gravel safety pit at the end of the track, where it was stopped by a sand mound. Carson reported that Ruggiero was wearing a helmet and was also secured with a five-point safety harness. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
