A quirky play made the difference as the Pirates and Yankees wrapped up their series at PNC Park yesterday. Joe Block has the recap.
The Pirates did not allow a hit until the 6th inning. Manager Derek Shelton credited the Pirates pitchers, especially Colin Selby and Andre Jackson, for keeping the Yankees’ bats quiet.
Shelton says it was a good weekend series with the Yankees, and it showed that the Pirates have promise.
Yankees starter Carlos Rodon was infuriated by Jason Delay’s double. He waved his arms and simulated Delay swinging with his eyes closed. Delay knew it was a lucky hit.
The Pirates are off today and begin a nine-game road trip tomorrow in Chicago. They’ll play three games each against the Cubs, Reds, and Phillies.
THE MINORS
The season concluded for the Altoona Curve yesterday with a 10-inning, 4-3 win over Akron. The Curve finished 67-68 on the year, in third place in the Eastern League Southwest Division. Tsung-Che Cheng scored on a passed ball for the game-winner.
Triple-A Indianapolis is the only Pirates minor league affiliate still playing. They wrap up their schedule with six games at home against Rochester starting tomorrow night.
