Some losses sting more than others, and the Pirates’ loss last night certainly was painful, as they blew a big lead to the Dodgers. Joe Block recaps a bad night in LA.
The Pirates conclude their visit to Los Angeles tonight. Johan Oviedo [3-9, 4.61 ERA] goes to the mound against Dodgers lefty Julio Urias [5-5, 4.94 ERA]. It’s a 9:45 airtime, 10:10 first pitch from Chavez Ravine on WCCS.
The Pirates are searching for answers with their pitching staff. Right-hander Luis Ortiz was dropped from the rotation and sent to Indianapolis yesterday after surrendering ten runs in eight innings over his last two starts. He gave up three home runs in three-and-a-third innings on Tuesday. Right-handed reliever Yohan Ramirez was recalled from Indy. Manager Derek Shelton did not say what his plans are for replacing Ortiz in the rotation.
Despite the Pirates’ hope that third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes could return after a minimum stay on the injured list, Hayes was not activated yesterday when he became eligible. He is still dealing with lower back inflammation.

The Angels’ Mike Trout underwent surgery yesterday for a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. He’s expected to return in 4-to-8 weeks. Trout suffered the injury in Monday’s loss to the San Diego Padres.
