State police say a suspect in a vehicle chase this morning through Center Township and Homer City borough died in a shooting that involved troopers.
In a news release, police say the incident started at 11:55 last night when a marked state police vehicle tried to pull over the suspect in the area of Yankeetown Road and Lockard Avenue Extension in Center Township. A vehicle pursuit was initiated after the traffic stop failed. The suspect, identified only as an adult male, led police for several miles over roads in Center Township and Homer City Borough. Greenfield said that police did try everything possible to bring the chase to a peaceful end.
During an encounter on 119 in the area of Tide Road, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was hit. While troopers rendered aid, the suspect died on-scene.
No troopers were injured. The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. The troopers involved are on administrative duty while the State Police, Indiana County DA’s office and the Coroner’s office investigate the incident.
Troopers were assisted by Citizens Ambulance, Indiana County’s Emergency Management Agency, and Homer City Fire Department.
