The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is once again placing parts of the state under a Code Orange Air Quality Action Alert. While Indiana County doesn’t fall under the alert, some neighboring counties do.
The DEP said portions of neighboring Armstrong and Westmoreland County are under a Code Orange Air Quality Action alert due to high levels of ozone in the air. Under this type of alert, sensitive groups — including young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems – are vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and are asked to limit outdoor activities.
Indiana County is labeled under a moderate air quality warning. This is not due to high levels of ozone, but rather an increased presence in particle pollution. The National Weather Service advises residents to reduce time spent outdoors.
