Indiana Area School District Superintendent Michael Vuckovich will leave the district later this year to take a similar job closer to his home.
On Thursday night, the Windber School Board voted to offer Vuckovich the job of Superintendent in their school district. This will be a move that will allow him to stay close to home, and it is the district where his children attend school.
Vuckovich said that while he was proud of making sure the district’s finances were in order, he was also proud of serving the children in the district in new ways.
Vuckovich came to Indiana in 2018, taking over for Dale Kirsch after serving the Greater Johnstown School District for 16 years, with the last year and eight months as the interim superintendent. He had also served the Greater Johnstown District as a principal and assistant principal at the high school and as a teacher. For the past five years, he has also been an adjunct professor at Pitt-Johnstown.
In the last few years, Vuckovich has had to guide the district through two unprecedented events: the Covid-19 pandemic and the fire that destroyed Eisenhower Elementary School. School Board President Walter Schroth called Vuckovich the best superintendents that he’s worked with and said he was very proud of how Vuckovich lead the district through the pandemic.
Vuckovich’s last day with Indiana School District will be May 12th, and he will start at Windber the following Monday. In a statement, the board said that they will look to approve Robert Heinrich as acting superintendent. Heinrich has served the last four years as the district’s Director of Education.
