Today in Harrisburg, inauguration ceremonies will be held for the 48th Governor of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania’s former Attorney General Josh Shapiro will be sworn in as Governor during ceremonies at noon at the State Capitol. Shapiro, a Democrat, becomes the first governor since 1966 to succeed a member of the same political party. He served the last six years as Pennsylvania’s attorney general.
Shapiro becomes the third Jewish Pennsylvania Governor. He will be sworn in on three Jewish bibles: one of them a family heirloom, another was one that was rescued from the Tree of Life Synagogue after the 2018 anti-semitic attack there, and the third was carried by Herman Hershman, a Jewish solider from Philadelphia in World War II which is on loan from the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.
Also being sworn in today is Lt. Governor Austin Davis. Davis will become the first African-American Lieutenant Governor in Pennsylvania.
After the ceremonies, the Governor will go to a celebration at Rock Lititz in Lancaster County for a concert that will feature performances that include Philadelphia-based rock band Mt. Joy, R&B Legend Smokey Robinson and Pittsburgh-based rapper Wiz Kalifa.
