At Thursday night’s Homer-Center School Board meeting, some district parents brought their concerns about a book used in high school English class to the school board.
The board heard excerpts from the book “All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely that included profanities that was being used in 10th Grade English. One of the parents, Brian Supko, said that the book vilifies police, normalizes drug use, and also deals with racism in a controversial manner.
Supko said after talking with district officials, his son would be assigned an alternative book.
Later in the meeting, board member Michael Schmidt said that they will take the matter very seriously.
In other business, Thursday night’s meeting was the last regular meeting for Superintendent Curtis Whitesel, who is moving on to a superintendent’s position with Bald Eagle Area School District next month. Whitesel said he will miss the district.
The board will hold a special meeting next Monday at 6:00 to vote on a new Superintendent.
