Jack Suwinski did something yesterday no other rookie Major Leaguer had ever done. He cranked three homers in the same game, including a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.
Greg Brown has the exciting recap.
Jack Suwinski says it was a very special Father’s Day, with his dad, Tim, in the stands.
Manager Derek Shelton likes Suwinski’s development as a young hitter.
Shelton says he kidded with Suwinski when the rookie stood in the on-deck circle in the 8th inning.
The Pirates will try to build off the momentum of yesterday’s win with an influx of new young talent tonight when the Chicago Cubs visit PNC Park. The Bucs have called up their top prospect, shortstop Oneil Cruz, along with outfielder/first baseman Bligh Madris from Triple-A Indianapolis. JT Brubaker (0-7, 4.50 ERA) will get the ball for the Pirates against Cubs right-hander Caleb Killian (0-1, 8.00 ERA in two starts at the Major League level). 6:40 airtime on WCCS.
Oneil Cruz hit only .233 at Indy, but was hitting .283 this month. Bligh Madris was a Spring Training standout who has continued to swing a hot bat at Indy, hitting .304 with fifteen doubles, two triples, five home runs, and 20 RBIs.
The Pirates will need to make some roster moves today. Liover Peguero will likely head back to Altoona. Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba was placed on the 60-day injured list on Friday with a fractured right wrist.
