State police are investigating the theft of two GPS systems from a car in White Township that happened between September 19th and 20th. Police say that an unknown person removed two TomTom GPS systems from the glove compartment of the unlocked vehicle of a 76-year-old Indiana woman. The vehicle was parked in the area of Redspire Lane. A canvass of the neighborhood turned up nothing. The GPS systems were valued at $425.
Unemployment compensation fraud is once again on the rise in Indiana County as state police reported six different investigations into this crime. In all five instances, someone filed for unemployment benefits using someone else’s identification information. They were reported on September 7th in Logan Township, Blair County that involved an Indiana County man, September 16th in Center Township, September 17th in Conemaugh Township and September 20th in South Mahoning Township, Marion Center Borough and Indiana Borough. No money was lost in these cases.
Another scam that has seen some success is a gift card scam using a phone call meant to frighten the victim into action. State police say that on September 2nd, someone called a 57-year-old Indiana woman at her home on Stonegate Road in White Township and claimed that the county had bench warrants out for her. The victim then gave the person about $3,434 in gift cards over the phone. Police were not able to develop any suspects in this investigation.
