State Senator Joe Pittman is encouraging Governor Tom Wolf to lobby and aggressively promote the Indiana and Armstrong County region as a place where U.S. Steel could put two new steel mills.
Last week, U.S. Steel announced plans to build a state-of-the-art “mini mill” in the United States. Reports say the mill would be a three-million-ton flat-rolled facility and would combine two electric arc furnaces with differentiated steelmaking and finishing technology. The mini-mill would produce “highly profitable proprietary sustainable steel solutions, including advanced high strength steels” according to the company. The mill would be a $3 billion facility.
Meanwhile, Nucor Corporation announced on Monday that they want to build a $2.7 billion mill, with potential locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
In a letter to Governor Wolf, Pittman said he wanted to see a strong bipartisan effort to bring the mills to the area he represents. The letter said that “securing these projects for development in Indiana and Armstrong Counties” would go a very long way in replacing the family sustaining wages and property taxes lost as a result of RGGI.”
