Mars High School graduate Will Bednar, the brother of the Pirates’ David Bednar, threw six no-hit innings to lead Mississippi State to the college baseball national championship in an 9-0 wipeout of Vanderbilt.
Working on just three days rest, Bednar walked three of the first five hitters he faced, but then retired 15 Commodores batters in a row. He left after six innings and the no-hitter continued until one out in the 8th inning, when Vandy’s Carter Young singled off Landon Sims. It was the only hit of the night for Vanderbilt. A likely first-round draft choice in this month’s MLB Draft, Bednar was named the Outstanding Player of the College World Series.
The Commodores’ Kumar Rocker, who until dropping in the rankings this season was considered the top contender to be the first overall draft pick by the Pirates, was knocked out of the game in the 5th inning after his teammates committed six errors behind him.
