During their meeting Wednesday morning, the Indiana County Commissioners received an update on the status of their project to get broadband internet access to under-served areas of the county.
Earlier this month, congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission approved a $1.5 million grant for Indiana County for the Broadband Deployment Initiative, which includes the deployment of more than 100 miles of fiber optic cable, establishing eight wireless telcom sites and provide high-speed internet access to about 825 homes and 75 businesses in the county.
The Office of Planning and Development’s Executive Director Byron Stauffer said that the contract was received and he is asking the department of Community and Economic Development to administer the federal funds.
The Commissioners expressed their appreciation to Congressman Thompson for his assistance in the effort.
In other business, the Commissioners approved four $50,000 loans from the CARES act revolving loan fund. Those loans will go to Romeo’s Mediterranean Kitchen, Luxemberg’s, Noble Stein Brewing Company and Maudie’s Sixers.
